YouTube Live Events and Hangouts on Air

Have something to say, and want the world to hear it? Well, with Hangouts On Air, you can share and record your live discussions and performances with everyone.

Hangouts On Air lets you:

- Broadcast a hangout: Invite circles or individual people to join you in a hangout, then broadcast it to the world. A live player of your hangout will be posted to your Google+ Home page and YouTube channel.

- Edit and share the recorded Hangout: Your hangout will be recorded as a public video. The recording will be available on your Home page once your hangout has ended.

You'll also be able to edit the recording when the hangout is over and your post (and the video URL) will automatically be updated to show the edited version. Editing on YouTube is only available on videos shorter than 2 hours. You can download longer videos to be edited on your own computer.

EDIT 24.07.2015:  Looks like there have been some changes.
See this article from YouTube Help Center  and Google+ Help Center  about Hangouts on Air.

My tips for using YouTube Live Events to create and start a Hangout on Air

If your channel is in good standing (no strikes), you can enable live events from your Account Features page. Your channel also needs to be phone verified for longer uploads (same goes for regular HOAs). When starting a Hangout on Air, if you get a message saying: "Not connected to YouTube" then check this link:  SMS verification for YouTube

Once your channel is enabled for live events, you’ll see a "Live Events" option in your Video Manager.

There is no need to create a Google+ Event for a Hangout on Air anymore: This feature just came back after being removed in June 2014.

Both HOA started from the Google+ or YouTube Live Events can be used for private coaching, testing or demo videos too.  These can easily be used in a Google+ Event with several Hangouts on Air -broadcasts.  One just keeps changing the YouTube -link in the Event and saving the earlier links to the Event description.

Another way to quickly start a HOA on Google+ is via this link:  Start a Hangout on Air

How to stream live HOA from YouTube Live Events:

Go to your YT channel, under the top right avatar click on Creator studio.
Then from the left, choose Video manager -> Live events.
Top right click New live event.

- Title (Can be changed)
- When (now or scheduled)
- Description: Same place where you can also add the clickable minute tags / schedule after the video is finished.
- Tags

Choose Public, Unlisted or Private video.

Make sure the Type is Quick, that's for Hangouts on Air.  (Click on the images below to enlarge)

Advanced settings tab on top
- Comments, promotions, restrictions, category etc. Important stuff, too.

When you're done with all the settings, save them by creating the Live Event: "Go live now" only creates the Live Event, doesn't start the HOA yet.
Then when you're ready before the scheduled Event just click on the "Start Hangout on Air" and after that everything is like in a normal HOA.

You may see this starting screen: You can invite people to come inside the Hangout on Air from the top pop-up or from the blue button.
Only share the actual HOA link with the guests who participate in the Hangout on Air filmstrip!  For the others just watching, you can share a link to the YouTube video (bottom right, links).

Make sure you are the FIRST one in the HOA, or you may not see the "Start broadcast" button if you have shared the link to the filmstrip!

You can test the Hangouts on Air by yourself by making it private: Press all the buttons and add / check the Apps, use the Google Drive, try screensharing from the green app, take photos with Capture; see what the Apps can do. :-)  To stop using the app, just click again on the icon in the left popup menu.

Remember when live streaming: If music is played on any Event, be extra careful because copyright violations in a HOA can cause Channel suspension after 3 copyright strikes.
However, your live broadcast may be terminated, and you may be suspended from running more HOAs until your channel is back in good standing (there may be a several months suspension).

Also, even if you have permission to use music, the broadcast can be terminated because of a Content ID match. You would need to have your channel whitelisted by the copyright holder or the company that manages their content on YouTube to ensure that doesn't happen.

There is no Pause -button in a HOA...  But there is the Mute mic.

Using the "Capture" app inside the HOA - it's nice to take photos of the live event or of yourself. :D
Click on the blue camera icon on the left pop-up and then take pics by clicking the camera at the bottom of the screen.
The photos will be found under "All photos" on Google+ Photos tab (left menu). From there one can copy them to albums. You can also click the pics open in the Hangout, from bottom right.
